The Memorial Garden

  At  the Cape House was constructed in October of 2006.The Memorial garden at the Cape House commemorates friends and loved ones associated with the New England Food Foundation Inc. The design goals  of the Cape House Memorial Garden are to create a garden to inspire, educate and be explored by the children and visitors during there stay at the Cape House, and to enhance the historical nature and the esthetics of the Cape House. Opportunities for memorial gifts of shrubs, benches, garden enhancements and engraving of paving materials are incorporated into the design. There is also in remembrance to Father Murphy, a small sitting area in the Garden. The Garden design was done by Juliagardens of Osterville, Massachusetts. Juliagarden is owned and operated by Julia Esteves, the daughter of our caretaker at the Cape House George Esteves .

The Memorial Garden
The Cape House Memorial Garden will be a special place for remembering members and family and  friends of the New England Food Foundation. There will be a private garden for contemplating and viewing various memorial gifts. There will be many opportunities for memorializing loved ones such as benches, river rocks, a diverse list of plants, bricks and a blue stone walkway. 

The Memorial Garden as a Children's Garden
 The design of the garden incorporates features for education and inspiration for children and visitors. The design shows a perimeter planting with benches tucked against  the walls and the central symmetrical beds meant to be traversed and experienced in different ways.

These central areas have a horticulturally interesting and sculptural shrubs, proposed are grafted shrubs such as Pegee
Hydrangeas ,and contorted European Filberts so that the mature height of these plants does not exceed the graft while there are characteristics draw attention. You will be able to walk under the Hydrangeas like a tunnel to reach the middle of the garden.

These beds have pea stone as a surface and round smooth river rocks are placed in a random pattern with space for memorial messages. One can walk to through and contemplate the space. Upon reaching the middle of the garden,a cobble -edged flush planting area with engraved brick bridges both the Message Garden beds. The beds contain scented plants like Thyme and when stepped upon, a fragrance would be released. All the shrubs in the garden would have the opportunity of being labeled with the horticultural and common name including a dedication plant plaques.
